Just a reminder
Just a reminder that this week's class will be held this Wednesday, May 9th, instead of Friday at the Long Beach Hyatt, 200 South Pine Avenue. We will meet in the lobby at 11am, sharp, as we have to meet with management to sign a liability waiver. Our contact there is Mary Cray. We will have three hours there to work.
We will then be free to photograph around the hotel, including the lobbies, the garden, the pool area, grounds, the entryway, etc. We can use tripods, but we must be careful not to use them in crowded areas. Unfortunately, the upstairs restaurant area has been reserved and we can not go there. Also, we will not be able to photograph the Hyatt logo. I will be there to demo the shift lenses with the digital camera and what they do.
The goal is to shoot some creative images of activities and architecture that tells a story of the hotel. This is one of the nicest and largest hotels in Long Beach and we want to show that in the images.
The homework assignment for the last class, May 18th, will be to show 5-6 images from this shoot. Again I'd like to see a theme, not just a shot of flowers and the like. Treat it as though it was a commercial assignment, or as an art piece for the hotel.

Assignment is due on April 27th
There is an assignment is due on April 27th. For those who went to the Salton Sea, please show five of your best from that outing. For those who did not, please show five local urban landscapes. A mix of day and night shots would be great.
Here is the text about the student spring show and the LBCC Photo Festival:
Many of you have done some great work this semester. Please enter the photo contests. Four years ago, my assistant, Justin Renshaw, who was then an LBCC student won the grand prize--and some cash. Check out his winning image: http://www.lbcc.edu/PhotoFest/Contest.cfm
Please join us next week for our 5th annual PhotoFest@LBCC on Wednesday, April 25th and Thursday, April 26th. The festival, which features two days of free photography-related workshops, seminars and celebrations provides an opportunity for photographers to socialize and share their enthusiasm for photography. Our Thursday evening Keynote speaker this year will be renowned photographer, Harry Benson, who’s photographed everyone from the Beatles to Brad Pitt.
The main emphasis of the festival are the workshops, demonstrations and exhibitions which are free, open to all, and are suitable for all levels of expertise. To register for the events, please visit our website: http://www.lbcc.edu/photofest/
If you are a LBCC student, make sure to enter our multiple photography contests and attend the closing exhibition Saturday, April 28th which will showcase the work and reveal the contest winners. Information on the contests can be found at: http://www.lbcc.edu/PhotoFest/Contest.cfm
• Festival Workshops and Lectures will be held at Long Beach City College, 4901 E. Carson Street, LB - please see each event registration page for specific rooms.
• Portfolio Walk, prior to Harry Benson’s talk we will be hosting a portfolio walk. Bring your own work to share, or just come to give feedback.
• Closing Photography Exhibition will be held at 635 Pine Avenue, Long Beach, in conjunction with the Historic Old Pine Avenue Business District Association.

Palm Spring Photo Festival Update
The Palm Spring Photo Festival begins on Sunday, March 31st and runs through Friday, April 6th. I will be in PS on Friday, March 31st and am available by cell phone. I hope you all are arranging carpooling, especially for the few students who do not have cars. The weather is supposed to be in the mid 80s, but the desert evenings can be cool, so bring warmer clothes, too. Sunscreen is recommended, too.
Our day at the Festival is Tuesday, April 3rd and the plan is to meet at the Starbucks at 101 S. Palm Canyon Drive at the corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way at 10am. I estimate that it will take about 2.5+ hours to drive from Long Beach. PLEASE BE ON TIME SO WE CAN GO IN AS A GROUP. To get an idea of what is in store, please view and download the Attendee Welcome Packet which highlights important information about the festival HERE.
http://2012.palmspringsphotofestival.com/links/2012_AttendeeWelcomePacket.pdf
When you drive to Palm Springs, take the Highway 111 exit off I-10, which turns into Palm Canyon Drive. The Starbucks is right in the middle of town. There should be plenty of street parking available.
The Festival headquarters is at the Hyatt Hotel, a half block from the Starbucks. If you are going to be late, please call or text my cell phone, 310-430-0552.
Don't forget your cameras and tripods (and charged batteries!), as we will be driving to the Salton Sea that afternoon to do some shooting. We will decide the locations based on what we all want to shoot. I will have scouted the locations beforehand.
Look forward to a great, exciting day!

Street Shots
A few famous street photographers are Garry Winogrand, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helen Levitt and Robert Frank. Google them to look at their work to see their styles.
A helpful rule when you shoot street photography, landscape, or anything in between, it's helpful to remember the acronym DIE. "D" stands for design, "I" is for information, and "E" is for emotion. Good street shots will have all of these criteria.
the assignment for this week is to show 3-5 interesting "street shots" due March 2nd
